How a center must be chosen in a kpop group

I’ve been streaming exo performances and I just can’t help but thank SM for choosing the best center there could ever be in the group.

I feel like there’s various of reasons why he was chosen but here’s what I’ve noticed:

  1. The center must be a main or lead dancer.

Kai is EXO’s main dancer and in performances, he controls the overall energy of the group because, well, he’s the center. In early days of EXO, I believe he’s had “overdancing” problem too but as time pass, he gradually found the right way to blend in but also stand out in their performances. He catches the camera more frequently than others and people naturally gravitate on who’s seen or appears more. If the center is a weak dancer, the mistakes he does and how weak his performance is can be easily highlighted.

  1. The center CAN’T be tone-deaf.

Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of kpop idols that are borderline tone-deaf which ruins the song flow. The center must at least know how to sing their lines because they take the most screentime usually and you can’t just expect the main vocal to keep singing while the camera’s on him. They don’t have to be main vocal or even lead vocal level but they can’t be the idol that gets dragged during encores too while the rest does well.

  1. The center has to be visually striking

Not all visuals are centers but the ones that are have their own identity. Like you can tell they’re pretty or handsome, but it doesn’t just stop on that. Example: Karina is pretty and looks ai generated. The same with Taeyong in NCT. Kai is also one of EXO’s visual but he isn’t really the typical porcelain doll that fits KBS. He’s visually striking enough that even if Sehun is objectively prettier, he still catches your attention.

  1. The center must have some type of on stage and off stage personality

A whole 180 turn in persona always makes someone interesting. A lot of stans stay because of the variety show aspect in kpop so this kind of “cold, mysterious guy on stage then cute, shy, innocent character off”, whether planned by the company or has always been the idol’s personality works like a charm.

Anyway, that’s it. I think centers are probably the most important position in a group and if not chosen correctly, everything just falls apart.
