So it has come that time of year when the mama award nominations have officially been announced. While I was watching the nomination, something I noticed was the criteria changed for the daesangs, most specifically Song of The Year. Last year for Mama 2025, the criteria for Song Of The Year used to be determined with 40% Korean digital points, 20% global points, and 40% for judges panel evaluation. This year, mnet decided to make both Korean and global digital points be weighted the same amount which is 30% each and kept the judges panel the same. Not only that, but mnet decided to add a new category called “Top 10 songs”. Now this category will basically decide the top 10 finalist who will make the shortlist for Song of the year and battle for the win. The top 10 will be determined solely by digital points, so basically the judges “pick“ between the final 10 to determine the winner.
Now I don’t know why they decided to do this, I mean probably because kpop is more global now but it’s still a korean award show. Of course giving how this was a drastic change, all the predictions instantly changed. For example, Good Goodbye used to have a lead of 13% againts second place which was Blue Valentine. Now due to the change, Swim sky rocketed to first place since their global points are unbeatable and it’s basically tied to Good Goodbye now, Blue Valentine dropped to 6th place. Basically the winner will be determined by judges votes now since they are only 1% apart, but let’s be honest mama will give it to whoever they want even if the “judges votes” say otherwise. Plus it’s not like Song of the year was the only category that saw the global digital points increas, all the other criteria aswell. For all the other categories global points are weighted the same now, with vocal and dance categories also changing a lot aswell.
Now I don’t know why they decided to do this, sure kpop‘s global popularity increased but it’s literally a korean award show. Before there was a good balance giving how the korean digital points were still weighted a bit more, but know it’s the same. I feel like they added the new top 10 songs category to not make people as upset but still I just don’t get why they decided to go this root. I honestly feel bad for Hwasa and Nmixx, but at the end of the day Swim was also an amazing song. Also just because they are tied it doesn’t mean one of them will end up being the winner. The judges vote are basically the most important, last year for Artist of the year Aespa had a 10% lead between gdragon yet he ended up winning.
