Old-line Korean bakeries sell senbei and modern desserts from the same counter

Spent an afternoon in Jeonju looking at what the older bakeries there actually stock, and the mix was not what I expected.

The assumption going in was that a long-running Korean bakery would mean traditional confectionery only. Peanut and ginger senbei, that sort of thing. Those were there, stacked in gift boxes by the register. But so was a full modern bread counter, cream buns and salt bread and bagels, plus chocopies in white chocolate, green tea, cream cheese, black sesame and multigrain.

It is not a preserved old shop and it is not a trend bakery either. Both things sit on the same shelves and nobody seems to find that odd. The gift-box wall is aimed squarely at people taking something home to family, which is a large part of why these places survive at all.

Anyone else noticed this pattern at old bakeries elsewhere in Korea, or is Jeonju a special case because of the tourist traffic?
