I came across a post saying that some group (I’d honestly never heard of before) “saved kpop,” and I couldn’t help but wonder… what does saving Kpop even mean?
Like, what are we actually referring to when we say a group “saved” kpop? Bringing in new fans? Having a fresh sound? Changing the direction of the industry? Having a bunch of successful songs?
Because if you asked me to name a group that I think brought a genuinely fresh sound and has a very distinct identity and color, the first group that comes to mind is probably BOYNEXTDOOR.
Not saying they “saved K-pop,” because I don’t really think any one group can claim that lol, but I do think they have a sound that feels very them and stands out among a lot of what’s currently being released.
It also makes me think of Dino (seventeen), who was called the “future of kpop,” and now, with his solo debut, he’s bringing elements of 2nd gen kpop and even trot back onto the charts. That’s another example of how one artist can influence the conversation around kpop and bring attention to sounds and styles that may not be as prominent in the mainstream anymore.
So I’m curious: when you say a group “saved kpop,” what does that actually mean to you? And which group would you pick?
