All fundamental things about K-pop are still based completely on what the Korean market wants, not what “we” want

People think that k-pop has “changed” to please the western/american market, but I usually beg to differ. I still see korean companies prioritizing their domestic fandom in every possible way. Even groups that take off internationally rather than domestically typically operate in this way as well.

People often wonder why certain things would get released, how come some names in kpop happen because it sounds too much like something else in western culture, or the famous nonsensical english lyrics in every other song. Who else would be alright with those decisions if not for the domestic fanbase?

This doesn’t only apply to music or creative decisions, it applies to PR as well. It doesn’t matter how big the group is, it will all boil down to domestic opinion and perception on what seems right and what seems wrong.

I do find it funny, of course. You’d think that more companies would care about their success outside in a less superficial way. But I have found out that they don’t (or at least not in the way we think).

Western/american success is like a trophy they can take back home to brag about. For every group I’ve pretty much ever seen, there’s not much else to it. This is why so many things happen over and over. It is typically not necessary to go the extra mile (or is it? Depends on who you ask)

The only times where I have seen lack of research affect certain agencies has happened when they tried to tour overseas (in the US) and had to cancel due to low ticket sales.

But other than that….anyway.
