I was thinking about how much a group’s management and song selection really dictate their career, sometimes even more than raw skill. There are groups out there overflowing with aces—insane live vocalists, incredible dancers, and great stage presence—yet it feels like their companies consistently give them tracks or concepts that don’t showcase what they’re truly capable of.
The biggest example that always comes to mind for me is NMIXX. Vocally and performance-wise, every single member is extraordinarily skilled, but the “mixxpop” direction and polarizing title tracks often leave people debating the music rather than appreciating just how ridiculously talented they are. Another classic case is GOT7 during their early-to-mid company days, where it often felt like the members had so much charisma, self-producing ability, and vocal flair that got boxed in by management decisions until they took the reins themselves.
On the other hand, you see groups where the creative team understands their strengths down to a science and hands them songs that elevate their identity effortlessly. It makes you realize how vital smart A&R really is.
Which groups do you look at and think: “Their skill level is 10/10, but the company’s music choices just aren’t doing them justice”?
