First off, I think there’s many aspects in how their hiatus could change the kpop scene but for now I just wanna start off with the formation of girl groups.
A theory I’ve had for a while is that a lot of kpop companies drew away from debuting 9 member ggs because of the impact of Snsd and then Twice that followed them. And yes since Twice we’ve had other 9 member ggs but it’s become a rarity in the newer generations. I also think another reason for the lack of larger ggs in general is the obsession with breaking out into the American market and thus more kpop companies opted for smaller ggs.
However, now that the group is on a hiatus and various members are parting ways with JYP, I could definitely see other companies taking the advantage of debuting a 9 member gg. Most notably I think the first for this new generation could come from MNET with their second season of Girls Planet. If they follow the first season’s format then we could possibly get a 9 member gg from them.
I also found it interesting that a big 4 company girl group like Hearts2Hearts was 8 instead of 9, which most people expected they would be. A lot of people view this gg as the spiritual successor to SNSD and in some ways Twice, but SM was deliberate in debuting them as 8 and not 9. Many might not see it as a big deal and believe that h2h could still fill that space, but there’s something inherently confident in having the same formula gg to continue the legacy of 9. Both nation’s ggs have been large 9 member ggs and not to say things can’t change or progress differently, but there seems to be a clear pattern throughout the crux of time.
In conclusion, I just believe we could see an influx of companies trying to debut 9 member ggs in hopes of another Twice or SNSD since there’s a hole left in the industry for that kind of girl group.
