Bluetooth headphones acting weird in subway

I use my noise cancelling headphones on the subway. You can change the mode by pressing your hand over the right ear and it can switch from noise cancelling to transparency (hearing everything) and I usually keep it on noise cancelling because hell yeah.

Well, as soon as I enter the station and subsequently the train car, the headphones go haywire. Frequently they switch from noise cancelling to transparency without being toggled. At first I thought it was intense wind blowing on them, but I don’t have the same effect when riding my bike.

I’ve just chalked it up to a subway ghost wanting to interrupt my music ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Any idea what’s happening?
