Can YG stop involving himself so much in BABYMONSTER’s projects?

I just listened to their newest digital single, Sugar Honey Ice Tea (SHIT). I’ll leave a LINK to the song and lyrics here if you haven’t checked it out. YG is credited as both a writer and composer. He was also the primary contributor to the arrangement and the main producer of the track.

These are the three versions of the chorus:

1st chorus:

I’m the sugar honey ice tea and you know it
I’m the sugar honey ice tea and you know it
Ice, ice, ice and you know that I’m the coldest
I’m the sugar honey, I, I, I’m the sugar honey

2nd chorus:

I’m the sugar honey ice tea and you know it
I’m the sugar honey ice tea and you know it
Ain’t no other baddie like me, yeah, you know it
I’m the sugar honey, I, I’m the sugar honey ice

3rd chorus:

Sugar honey ice tea, you know it, know it
Sugar honey, I’m the sugar, I’m the sugar
Sugar honey ice tea, you know it, know it
Sugar honey, I’m the sugar, I’m the sugar

Yeah they’re the SHIT if you haven’t noticed. It’s a flex song through and through, which isn’t necessarily anything new for Babymonster, but the lyrics are just painfully corny. There’s a part in the first verse that goes:

Sugar mama, don’t do the drama
Just add the commas like yeah, yeah, yeah

…Really? They’re calling themselves “suga mama”?

I won’t go through every verse because this post would become way too long, but then you get to the bridge:

Tasty, yeah, I got you comin’ back
Crazy, I give you a heart attack
Baby, tell me, what you think about that?
What you think about that?
I’m the shh, woah, woah, woah-oh

During this section, Chiquita (who is still a minor btw) and Ahyeon, the two teenage members, take turns in the center bending over, dropping low, and twerking while delivering these lines. They did something similar during CHOOM, and now they’ve done it again here. Like seriously?

As for the song itself, I don’t think it was produced to the group’s strengths. The chorus relies on talk-singing and their voices are autotuned. They could’ve made the chorus far more explosive or something melodic, but instead it almost feels like an anti-drop. The rap section is also noticeably weaker than what they’ve delivered on previous title tracks. And then the outro falls back on the usual YG formula of repeatedly chanting the song title over and over again with louder drum beats in the background.

The biggest takeaway I had after listening to this was how out of touch YG feels creatively. CHOOM was heavily criticized by Korean listeners for its corny and cringey lyrics, yet somehow this mostly English song manages to fall into many of the same traps. It feels like so much musicality gets buried under gimmicks and these forced badass posturing.

At this point, I genuinely think it would be in the group’s best interest if YG took a step back from steering their musical direction. I don’t know about you guys, but this to me is easily their worst title track.
