Basically as the title says it’s very annoying how 1 dimensional online kpop fans are with evaluating controversies or “scandals.” I do agree female idols face more scrutiny but the answer is NOT to then continue a super hateful system onto male idols when it comes to minor controversies. Like why not try to break the cycle and not give grief to idols who make smaller mistakes (resting bitch face, misspeaking on certain less serious topics, being a “pick me”/ too much energy, etc)? I feel like the rhetoric hurts both parties because it over exaggerates something a male idol does and can negate when a female idol is actually wrong . For example, Boynextdoor Jaehyun got called out for being “rude” to twice on a music show when he was just goofing around and creating an atmosphere . Saying “but if it was a female idol” to justify hating over something so dumb is stupid lol but then on the flip side using that female idols get it worse can blind some fans to when a female idol really should get called out. I didn’t see it a lot but I’m sure there were people who would try to argue “oh men get away with much worse, kiss of life wasn’t that bad.” Like yeah sure they didn’t commit a crime but were still very wrong.
Which brings me to the second common phrase of “but Seungri/Taeil/ other sexual deviant former idol still has fans and you’re trying to cancel my fave!” It’s really disingenuous because sure Seungri and others have a fringe group of weirdos who still like them but they aren’t active in the industry, don’t make their money through music, and are effectively blacklisted from the industry. So no people aren’t lining up to their concerts and even with small shows they may have they aren’t selling out stadiums or getting big endorsement deals. Basically it’s another weak cop out to distract from when an idol has really done wrong . Like of course compared to r*pe everything else looks less serious! so it makes no sense to pull that card for everything.
But I semi- get why some fans say that. Because online kpop spaces are too extreme. They are looking to write off people super fast and have terrible discernment on what is a big scandal that shows truly poor character and what is a human mistake by young, immature and overworked adults who are still learning. In the real world someone may litter, be a little short with you, be distracted, not read the room, be a little ignorant and mean no harm. They don’t get branded as terrible people forever unless they do something really bad or it’s a pattern of poor choices. Yet sadly that grace doesn’t get extended to public figures. Idk just my thoughts . Overall it’s annoying when people can’t evaluate something and it devolves into “well if a hypothetical female idol did this then… so it’s okay to overreact to this one incident.” Or devolves into “soo what if they were racist/rude/ or terrible, Seungri still has fans! “ like can we actually have proper dialogue?
Also I know the answer is I need to unplug bc in real life most people are normal lol
