I’m in a nostalgic mood and thought it would be fun to talk about everyone’s favorite year for kpop releases. What about the year made you enjoy it so much? Which parts of it are you happy to see returning today? What specific songs really made the year for you?
Mine would have to be 2020. In spite of (or possibly because of) the COVID pandemic, I think there were a ton of excellent songs released that year. JYP groups really rocked 2020: Twice was on their all-time personal favorite run from Fancy to ICSM, ITZY had excellent releases with Wannabe and Not Shy, and Stray Kids had God’s Menu. Everglow was still going strong, Hwasa’s Maria was an absolute banger, and Astro (I really liked Astro) roughly at their peak. A lot of non big-4 groups also did very well in 2020, like how Nonstop and Dolphin went ultra viral.
The whole year had many upbeat, danceable, house-influenced releases that were great to play at dangerously loud volumes. There was a really awesome mix of third gen releases, while new fourth gen groups were also getting started bringing new sounds into the space. It was all very energetic and colorful, which was just what I needed to make it through the year.
A close second would be 2023, as there were some excellent R&B-influenced tracks that year that ultimately led to me getting really into R&B as a whole for a while.
Please share your favorite year of kpop below! ♡
