Han Byung-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said Wednesday that the party will push to revise the National Assembly Act to fundamentally block “useless sham filibusters.” “At this historic turning point, the People Power Party, which should be a partner in state affairs, is still blocking the normalization of the Republic of Korea with sham filibusters even at this moment,” Han said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly. “This is irresponsible behavior that eats away at the golden time for people’s livelihood recovery. It is legislative violence that holds people’s lives hostage,” he said. “The 107 seats of the People Power Party should not become a fortress protecting insurrection forces, rather than a shield protecting the people.” Han noted that “livelihood tasks that need to be addressed are still piled up like a mountain,” adding that “the second-term Democratic Party floor leadership will take the lead in reform legislation including key government agenda items for the Lee Jae-myung administration, prosecution reform, and special prosecutor laws for the Unification Church and Shincheonji, and push forward boldly.” “The Democratic Party will end the People Power Party’s filibuster with a closure vote at this afternoon’s plenary session and immediately pass the second comprehensive special prosecutor bill,” he said. “We will uncover the truth of the insurrection and state affairs manipulation without a shred of doubt.” Regarding the first-instance sentencing scheduled for Wednesday on charges including obstruction of arrest by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials against former President Yoon Suk Yeol, Han said, “The special prosecutor demanded 10 years in prison, but the public sentiment is that it is too lenient.” “The court must remember the courage of the people who stopped the insurrection with their bare bodies.
