KPop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel — and the demon-slaying idols are set to return in 2029.
According to industry sources on Wednesday, Netflix and Sony Pictures have finalized an agreement to produce the follow-up to the megahit animated feature, kicking off production with a release target four years from now. The timeline reflects the lengthy development cycle typically required for large-scale animation.
Released in June, the original KPop Demon Hunters was produced by Sony Pictures and distributed globally by Netflix. The film follows K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey — members of the fictional girl group HUNTR/X — as they battle evil spirits and protect the world through their music.
The movie became a global sensation upon release, surpassing 300 million cumulative views by September to become Netflix’s most-watched film ever. Its soundtrack single Golden topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking one of the rare instances in which an animated film’s OST achieved mainstream pop success.
Following its record-breaking performance, fan demand for a sequel has been relentless. Director Maggie Kang, who co-helmed the film, also hinted at the possibility during a press conference in Seoul last August, saying, “I believe there are still many stories left to tell with these characters.”
