I came across an interesting video that breaks down which groups actually sing live and which ones lipsync during music show performances. So how it works is that this video reviews each group’s most recent comebacks across multiple music shows using a specialized software that is typically used to correct, reshape, and restructure vocals, samples, and recordings to determine whether the performances were live or not.
So here are the verdicts for the 15 groups analyzed in this video. We’ll start off with the GGs:
BABYMONSTER: LIPSYNC
– Audio too clean
– Identical delivery
– Unrealistic stability and zero breathing while jumping
– Voices continue despite mouth being closed
MEOVV: LIPSYNC
– Voices too smooth even during the most intense movements
– Identical vocal delivery
– Facial expressions not matching note
– Mouth closes between notes but voice/volume doesn’t waver
IVE: HEAVY BACKTRACK
– Heavy backtrack is present throughout
– Backtrack reliance varies from member to member (Rei, Gaeul, Yujin relied on it less)
– You can notice the change in volume with the weaker voice being heard underneath backtrack
TWICE: LIPSYNC
– Heavy body movement but voice stays unrealistically stable
– Identical vocal delivery
– Facial expressions not matching note
– Zero volume change or shakiness
– Audio too clean
Aespa: LIPSYNC
– Identical vocal delivery
– Mouth movement does not match lyrics
– Facial expressions not matching note
– Unrealistic stability despite heavy shaking body movement
ILLIT: HEAVY BACKTRACK
– Mic pop on certain words and you can hear two voices
– Voice shaking realistically when dancing
– Noticeable breathing and gasping
– Change in volume present
– Reliance on backtrack depends on member
NMIXX: GUIDE BACKTRACK (Light backtrack that’s mainly background harmonies)
– Every member sang live all throughout
– Different vocal deliveries across performances
– Realistic voice shakiness during heavier movements
– Live harmonies and adlibs
BLACKPINK: LIPSYNC (Pre-recorded)
– Audio track too clean
– Pitch corrected
– Voice doesn’t waver with movement
– Unrealistic stability
Le Sserafim: LIPSYNC (With autotune on pre-recorded track)
– Identical vocal delivery
– Audio track too clean
– Volume and voice too stable with no variation
– Sounds computerized and track is pitch-corrected (voices are buzzy which indicates clear pitch correction)
These are the results from BGs:
TXT: HEAVY BACKTRACK
– Mouth closes before voice finishes singing
– Two voices indicating live singing + backtrack
– Lipsync depending on performance but live vocals definitely present
– Realistic shakiness
ATEEZ: HEAVY BACKTRACK/GUIDE BACKTRACK (depending on the member)
– Live voice is louder than backtrack
– Voice shakiness during body movement
– Lipsyncing present during chorus
– Raps were live with minimal backtrack
– Jongho’s high notes were all live as you can hear the strain
– Reliance on backtrack varies by member
SEVENTEEN: LIPSYNC/HEAVY BACKTRACK (+pitch correction for pre-recorded track)
– No pops of audible air especially during rap parts indicates pre-recorded backtrack
– Audio too clean and robotic which indicates auto-tuning
– Voice too stable despite heavy movements + sounding computerized
– Some members lipsynced while others were live
– Backtrack reliance depends on member
STRAY KIDS: HEAVY BACKTRACK/GUIDE BACKTRACK (+possibility of live pitch correction)
– Audible air pops
– Backtrack used for support
– Live voices often louder than backtrack
– Some members sound slightly computerized due to possible live pitch correction effect
– Reliance on backtrack varies by member
ENHYPEN: LIVE/GUIDE BACKTRACK
– Slight backtrack but live voice is louder
– Realistic shakiness and facial expressions
– Audible air pops and breathing
BTS: LIVE (However, they’re the only ones on this list who were seated while singing as there was no choreography for the song)
– Different deliveries (one performance is breathier than the other for example)
– Imperfections can be heard
– Realistic facial expressions
– Talking and singing voices are the same volume
– Audible air pops
Normally, I can tell pretty easily with just my ears whether a group is singing live or not, but this video was still intriguing because it pointed out a lot of details. I also don’t have much of an issue with lipsyncing on music shows (as long as they’re not using pre-recorded vocals, because that just feels disingenuous), especially considering how brutal the schedules are during promotion periods. But it’s still interesting to see how different groups approach music show performances during their promotions.
