Czech Politicians Cooperate with Members of a Korean Sect. “We Had No Idea Who They Were,” They Say

In recent times, the South Korean sect Shincheonji has intensified its public activities in the Czech Republic. Through its affiliated organizations, it has managed to get close to some politicians. According to them, they were unaware that the events were connected to a church whose activities have previously been warned against by the Czech Bishops’ Conference.

“Come on, they’re not handing anything out here,” says a man to his partner, and the two continue walking toward the Church of St. Ludmila in Prague. What made them stop, at least for a moment, was an event called Peace Walk, organized on Wednesday—fittingly—at Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) by the group HWPL (short for Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light). In the center of Prague, the organization set up seating, a stage for speakers, and sound equipment covering a large part of the square.

Despite the rain, around sixty people gathered—most of them under thirty. “I’m one of the supporters, and the topic of peace is quite relevant these days,” explained one participant of the happening and subsequent march from Vinohrady to Old Town Square. Others chatted in small groups while passersby generally paid little attention to the event.

Dozens of people came together here to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of World Peace. Similar events had taken place in the Czech Republic in 2018 and 2019, but the tradition was interrupted by the pandemic.
