My problem with the way people talk about Jeongyeon and her body

Ever since Jeongyeon gained some weight, it feels like people have just been quietly waiting for her to go back to how she used to look. There’s this unspoken expectation that she’ll have some kind of “glow up,” and honestly, it’s draining. She probably already feels enough pressure on her own, but every time she shows up on camera, the comments are still focused on her body.

In Twice’s latest music video, there’s a quick scene where her stomach is visible. If you compare it to the rest of the video, it looks like her waist was slightly edited to appear slimmer. And just like that, people online start celebrating. Suddenly she’s “back,” she’s “lost weight,” she’s “glowing up.” All based on one shot that might not even reflect how she actually looks.

Jeongyeon used to be very thin. When she gained weight, most of it went to her upper body, and that’s just how her body naturally carries it. People store weight in different ways. Some gain it in their legs, others in their midsection or arms. For Jeongyeon, it added more to a frame that was already broader on top. But instead of seeing this as a normal part of how bodies change, people act like it’s something that needs to be hidden or corrected.

That’s why no matter what outfit she wears, people always say it doesn’t flatter her. Not because the outfit is actually bad, but because it doesn’t give her that exaggerated hourglass shape fans seem to expect. And since that’s not her natural silhouette, unless she’s wearing something super fitted or heavily styled, it’s just not going to be there. So if her stomach isn’t completely covered or if she’s wearing something more relaxed, the response is almost always negative.

Of course some outfits look better on certain body types, that’s just how fashion works. But in Jeongyeon’s case, it feels like the rules are different. Things that look fine on other members are suddenly considered bad styling when it’s her wearing them. It’s not really about the clothes, it’s about the fact that her body doesn’t fit a narrow ideal. And when people act like the only way for her to look good is to either hide her shape or force it into something it’s not, it just ends up feeling restrictive.

Not everyone needs to look like an hourglass to be attractive. Not every idol should have to fit into one specific body type to avoid criticism. Jeongyeon looks great, regardless of whether she matches what fans are used to seeing. It’s time people stopped treating her body like a before-and-after project and just let her exist without turning her into a topic of debate every time she’s on screen.
