The South Korean satellite startup TelePIX announced on Monday that it sent its high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) processor for satellites TetraPLEX into space.
The satellite equipped with TetraPLEX was launched into space last Friday aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launch vehicle. The satellite utilized a platform from an Italian company.
TetraPLEX is a processor capable of 10 trillion operations per second, developed in collaboration with the AI semiconductor company Nvidia.
It can perform AI computations in space and is also used for edge computing, which processes data.
TelePIX emphasized that space edge computing can reduce both time and costs compared to the conventional method of transmitting large amounts of data to ground stations for processing.
TetraPLEX will demonstrate real-time high-speed parallel processing of satellite big data AI models. It will also test satellite image preprocessing algorithms, and satellite attitude control decision algorithms and verify stability in a radiation-accumulated environment in space.
