Have you ever stopped to think that, unintentionally, many kpopers ended up evolving Lisa into a “standard” to be surpassed within Blackpink?
Whenever one of the girls releases something new, the comments end up revolving around comparisons with Lisa. They say that their songs are better than hers, that they are superior soloists… Lisa is always used as a reference, directly or indirectly. In the beginning, with the release of Mantra, when only Jennie and Lisa released solo songs, the comparisons made sense to a certain extent, especially because they were the only ones who had released songs. But the insistence on placing Lisa and Jisoo side by side (something that already happened before the release of AMORTAGE, based only on concept photos) seems forced and meaningless to me, and that’s what led me to this conclusion.
Jisoo and Lisa follow completely different paths. Their work and goals as artists are not at all similar. If I were to draw a more consistent parallel, I believe that Jisoo and Rosé have more similarities in this sense, both have already released their solo albums and both are the group’s vocalists (I personally don’t like comparisons between Blackpink members because they are never made in good faith – and, frankly, I don’t think they should be made), but, if we are talking about composition, for example, I personally consider Jisoo and Rosé to be the best songwriters in the group. I know that some may argue in favor of Jennie, but I personally like Jisso’s compositions better, in fact she is my favorite songwriter within Blackpink, so I feel that the comparison between Jisso and Rosé would make more sense (although I am not in favor).
But back to the main point: why does Lisa always end up being the most considered name in these discussions? Could it be that, deep down, people see her as a standard to be surpassed? I’m not talking about the music, but about Lisa herself. The ironic thing is that her music is constantly criticized, even being called “trash” by some. If her music is considered that bad, then saying that something is “better than Lisa’s music” shouldn’t even be a big compliment, right? But somehow, people have spent so much time belittling and trying to diminish it that they have ended up, without realizing it, elevating her to a level where everything needs to be compared to her.
I’m not saying that Lisa is the best artist in the group or anything like that, particularly within the group I like Jennie more as a soloist (her discography resonates more with me), but what I’m trying to get across here is that maybe people see Lisa as a standard to be surpassed without realizing it.
