A few hours ago, Bada posted a two-shot with BoA on her Instagram, almost definitely taken before/after the recent 30th anniversary SMTOWN which Bada attended. The picture itself is very cute, but what really got me about the post was the caption.
In particular, these lines: “I can never forget the pure, shimmering gaze of that young girl, who looked just like a unicorn…You have to look closely and carefully to truly see BoA.”
Whenever I see 1st gen artists’ interactions with BoA in recent years, I am hit with the realization that these are the people who can most empathize with the feelings of hardcore BoA fans. If you follow BoA casually, or know of her tangentially, you will see her as she is today: an amazing, mature artist; a strict judge on countless shows; a full-fledged producer of a kpop group; the Queen of Kpop herself. But if you dive into BoA’s career as a whole, or are someone like these 1st gen artists who were there from the start, what emerges is something soft and hazy around the edges, delicately inspiring, heartrending: the story of a young girl with stars in her eyes, who still has them to this very day.

Some 1st gen stories/interactions with BoA in recent years that move me in this way:
- Fly To The Sky Brian talking about how BoA was when she was a trainee
- Lee Hyori and Uhm Junghwa tearing up watching BoA reproduce her look from No 1
- Shinhwa were seniors BoA liked because they gave her snacks
- S.E.S Bada’s Instagram post that inspired this one!
- S.E.S Eugene’s Instagram post for the 30th anniversary SMTOWN where she specifically says she was sad she didn’t manage to take a picture with BoA The SM 1st generation artists, who saw BoA as a trainee and knew her as the maknae of SM.
And moments from that distant past, that lend credence to the more recent ones, because they put into perspective the BoA these artists first saw:
