Hello, I’m Korean. I’d like to bring up some sensitive points about my own country. Korea’s economic growth and convenient lifestyle are great, but sometimes I feel embarrassed about the lack of cultural depth that came with such rapid development.
When I ask foreign friends, many say they find it disappointing that almost every restaurant feels the same — the same steel chopsticks, the same side dishes on the table, not much variety. They also mention that most cities look alike, without much uniqueness in scenery or lifestyle. Compared to nearby countries like Japan, China, or Taiwan, our tourist attractions feel underdeveloped and not very appealing for travelers. Honestly, the fact that convenience stores are considered a “must-visit spot” for tourists says a lot about how little travel content we really have to offer.
People often say Koreans are kind, but in reality we’re extremely self-conscious of others’ opinions. Many tend to copy each other’s fashion and hairstyles, and that timid conformity feels a bit disappointing to me.
What do you all think about this?
