Why is INFINITE so little known internationally?

It’s a question I’ve been asking myself, not necessarily about their current comeback (because of course, over time, a group loses popularity), but even when they’ve won numerous awards and peaked, they’ve remained less popular internationally than some other kpop groups.

Do you have any idea why? I’ve heard that SM entertainement “spoiled” their potential, but I haven’t been able to find a precise explanation for this. Was it the agency? A question of timing? Or the fact that k-pop at the time they started was still “very niche” ?

I’ve always found their discography excellent, and I’ve never understood how a kpop fan can’t know about them! However, talking to some of the new fans I met at a kpop event in my country, a good number didn’t necessarily know them (although they did know about other groups who started out in the same period), which saddened me a little.

(+) I apologize in advance for my English or if my words are a little clumsy, it’s not my native language.
