what’s real and what’s not real in kpop?

okay so to preface this post i think im a very surface level kpop fan. i’m a musician who loves every genre, and the biggest thing that draws me to kpop is lowkey just the music production itself rather than idols, variety shows, performances, etc. don’t get me wrong though, im still sort of in tune with kpop culture and what goes and and stuff since there are like 3 groups im particularly fond of, but regardless my main point is i don’t know a lot😭

ive had this sort of lingering question for the almost the entirety of the time ive been listening to kpop (it’s been like 3 years): how much do kpop artists actually show of their true selves? like, what’s real in the industry and what isn’t? how actually involved are they in the writing/production process other than singing? and if they write most of their songs, how easy is it for them to come up with material about love? for all i know, it’s like incredibly taboo to even think that an idol these days is involved romantically with anyone yet like 90% of the songs coming out of the industry are about love and relationships. also, how much of their lives do their companies practically control? like, what are they allowed and not allowed to do, in-person and on anything televised?

i know these can seem like lowkey stupid thoughts especially if there are blatant answers out there, i’ve just found that when i sit down and really think about it, i have no answer to give myself😭 i would appreciate literally anything on this, i just can’t help but wonder when im listening to their songs and then actually seek out their content just to be skeptical of whether what they’re doing is genuine or not
