I thought it would be fun to start a little series called “This Day in KPop”, to spark some nostalgia and remind us of the songs, trends, and chaotic news cycles we lived through the years. Kpop moves so fast that it’s easy to forget just how different each year, and even each month, felt. Hopefully this can be a fun way for us to relive those eras together and maybe even discover (or hey, even rediscover) some of the gems.
Melon Chart
Here’s a snapshot of what Korea was streaming nonstop on this exact day. These were the songs blasting in cafés, filling karaoke rooms, and looping on everyone’s MP3 players/phones. It’s always interesting to see which tracks stood the test of time and which ones feel like a total “you had to be there” moment.

At this point in time we are a month into G-Dragons first solo album promotions and he is still managing to top the charts. Girl groups like KARA, T-ARA, and 2NE1 all battling it out, and Brown Eyed Girls were really shaking things up with that iconic Abracadabra concept. Surprisingly, we ended up with *two* idol collab songs in today’s chart!

- Abracadabra – Brown Eyed Girls [Music video version AND Stage version have taken the #2 and #3 spots on the MV charts]
- Amoled – Son Dam bi & After School [Honorable mention. Managed to chart #5 in the MV category despite not charting on the overall music charts]

Honorable mentions for news? 2PM is dealing with the aftermath of Jay Park departing. Lawsuits between SM Entertainment and TVXQ’s Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu that erupted in the summer are currently undergoing review by the court. Back in August there was news about Rain debuting a new 5 member boy group, which how now been pushed to October of 2009. SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong was diagnosed with swine flu (not serious news, but still a very “of the time” piece of news lol)
I also made a short little ‘Random bits‘ playlist from this week’s time period as well! I’m really trying to keep it down to this specific date (give or take a few days), so please understand if I don’t have every major thing from a specific group.
