Sometimes, all it takes is just one viral clip to reach mega success

So Hwasa and Lee Chanhyuk (AKMU) performed at the Blue Dragon Film Awards last week, one of the three most prestigious film award shows in Korea, and both of them went crazy viral, especially Hwasa. Her sharing the stage with Park Jungmin, the actor who featured in her MV created an instant viral moment. And it’s been real interesting to observe how their songs have been performing ever since.

Lee Chanhyuk’s song was released back in August, but it recently reached its daily peak on Melon at #13, jumping nearly 30 spots. And while Hwasa’s Good Goodbye was already doing incredibly well, staying in the top 10 for weeks, she gained over 130K(!) unique listeners on Melon in the last five days alone, which is honestly just mind blowing lol With that massive boost, she hit number 1 on Melon and finally ended Blue Valentine’s 30 day run at the top.

Although the Blue Dragon Film Awards always attract more attention, we saw time and time again that even a simple TikTok clip or a YT short is all it takes to change everything.

Hani’s legendary Up&Down fancam from 2014 literally saved EXID, taking them from a legitimate nugu group to one of the more popular girl groups of that era. Brave Girls’ Rollin’, a 2017 release, resurfaced in 2021 because of Yujeong’s fancam from an army stage when they had nowhere else to perform, and it ended up becoming the biggest song of the year. Even more recently, while not as drastic as those cases, Fifty Fifty’s Pookie went viral because of Moon Chanelle’s boy group dance version of the song that she did on a music show months before the clip suddenly blew up. iirc, Pookie originally released in April and was nowhere near the Melon Top 100 during promotions, but a few shorts went viral way later in July and the song ended up peaking at #41.

And I almost forgot Woodz. The man was in the freaking army when he sang a b-side from an album he released TWO years ago, on Immortal Songs late last year. That video now has more than 23 million views and he has become a major name solely because of it. It’s insane that the song never hit number 1 on Melon, but it’s clearly the track with the best longevity out of any release this year. Outside of the very first week of 2025, Drowning has stayed in the top 10 on Melon for the entire year. No other song even comes close to that.

It really amazes me how sometimes all it takes is just one clip to change everything. Moments like these remind me that timing and visibility can be just as powerful as the music itself.
