I don’t mean this post to be negative, so don’t make it negative or trash talk any groups or anything.
I made this post because kpop isn’t the only genre I listen to, I like other genres way more, and I’m kinda making this because I’m bored.
[this part is about YouTube music videos]
I was going down the rabbit hole of listening to some of my favorite rap songs, and I landed on childish gambino (or Donald glover wtv) ‘this is America’ and I’m surprised it didn’t hit 1 billion views yet. Same with Kendrick Lamar’s humble which only hit a billion views sort of recently. Even his music video for ‘DNA’ is at 200 million (not an exact number).
Maybe it’s because I’ve seen a lot of kpop music videos, but I’m use to seeing like groups like Itzy, newjeans, baby monster especially have a lot of music videos with over 200 million (don’t fact check me on that and count how many they have. I just mean it’s common for groups coming out the big 4 to get those numbers). I know those numbers come out of things like mass streaming or wtv, but it’s still surprising they technically get more views than more well known songs. (I’m from America so I mean here and that’s not really up for debate if childish gambino is more well known than baby monster for example)
I mean this with absolutely no malicious intent, and if it’s taken that way I will apologize but I genuinely believe if you played Kendrick Lamar humble more people would recognize that most kpop songs released around that time hitting those same viewership numbers currently. (So I was going to be specific in naming groups but I don’t want to get hounded by anyone and it isn’t entirely relevant , so use those critical thinking skills and fill up the blanks).
I feel like when those fan wars come between whoever people gonna bring up Spotify listens, and YouTube music video views, but it’s like it clearly doesn’t really matter. Arguing about who is more popular becomes an arbitrary discussion that’s not really going anywhere. Okay yeah BTS is the most impactful group when it comes to kpop because of how they popularized it (with the support of previous 1st and 2nd gen groups). Okay yes Beyonce is one of the most popular pop artists for decades.
… so where do you go after that if you can’t actually factually determine what other groups/ artist are more popular then another? (That was like so confusingly worded but I’m not putting much effort into this as seen by my grammar)
If you remember earlier I said childish Gambino was more popular than most groups in the 5th or 4th gen hitting those numbers, because where I’m from (I mena city) if you played “this is America” everyone is going to know it. Which isn’t an objective view on things at all.
So if views in a larger perspective don’t matter, how do you have discussions on who’s more popular than who? (even though it doesn’t rly matter at the end of the day I’m just curious)
