I am two weeks later with this than I was hoping to be. Apologies.
I have been trying my best to carve out a little happy space, especially to give recognition for the smaller groups. So with that in mind, here is my wrap-up for kpop releases in October!
In it, I list the debuts this month (there were five…and a half?) with links to their music videos or my reviews as applicable, as well as the songs I was really looking forward to. I haven’t gotten to all the ones I wanted to yet, but they’ll pop up in the future for those months’ wrap-ups. I did eight of those in October.
I’ll post part of it here, so that if you don’t want all the extra and fun bits I include in the wrap-up (like the songs I was listening to the most that I recommend and some other October specific things), you can still catch some of my favorite songs and the more technical bits.
The songs I really enjoyed were:
- Wonho (Monsta X) “Good Liar”: Yo. This song is so catchy. Fully in English, but oh, this is a catchy song.
- W24 “I gotta feeling”: This is a trilingual song and I am in love. The trilingualism is enough to make me ignore that it’s a bit repetitive.
- Hwasa (MAMAMOO) “Good Goodbye”: I like that we got the confirmation that this was in fact written about/for an ex. But, also it’s a completely gorgeous song, and I am so here for it. (I actually like the other version better, but it’s fine).
- NMIXX “Blue Valentine”: I still think that song sounds like it’s saying “Blue butterfly” but it’s fine. That’s my ears being weird more than anything.
- BABYMONSTER “WE GO UP”: Here’s the thing. Just because a group is currently on Underage Protocol, that doesn’t change it when I really, deeply love songs. This one is a prime example of that.
- TWICE “ME+YOU”: Happy anniversary, TWICE!
- Joochan (Golden Child) “Rise & Shine”: We got vibrato and scales and the cutest little slice of life music video.
- Lee Chanwon “Maybe Today”: I spent two days listening to this album and falling in complete head-over-heels love with his voice.
- &TEAM “Back To Life”: Again, this was their Korean debut as well as giving them music show wins. But I love this music video specifically so much.
- TEMPEST “In The Dark”: This one is another music video shout-out because you know what? The acting is incredible, the storyline is incredible, and it’s so delightfully Grimm fairytale that I want to shout about it from the rooftops. Not that the song (and the whole album) aren’t good too But this music video. Top Tier.
All of my reviews for October can be found here. Enjoy!
If you’re curious about the music show wins, here they are for the four weeks.
I only did one Greatest Hits post (F.T ISLAND’s “Wind”) and one Battle of the B-Sides post (LE SSERAFIM’s “Impurities”), but both songs are really good and really quite different from each other. I know who suggested the LE SSERAFIM song because that was a DM, but if you were the F.T. ISLAND suggestion from The Form, thank you so much for that one. I loved getting to know it.
Speaking of The Form, if there’s a song or twelve you’d like me to cover, feel free to tell me either in a comment or using The Form. The only reason I want songs to be two-years or older on the Greatest Hits is because I want things like hype and gut reactions to settle a little. And you can still suggest title tracks that are younger than two years, and I’ll post it when the song has matured. But otherwise, I will accept just about any song. I don’t care how big/small or popular/unknown a group is. A one-hit wonder is just as valued here as an artist that gets ten music show wins each release. And I will hype up all the songs that y’all give me.
Okay, I think that’s it for this one. I’ll see you all in about two weeks. Expect there to be some Award Show wrap-ups starting with November’s wrap-up (the posts for KGMAs Day 1 and 2 should be going up tomorrow, for instance, and they’ll be included then).
