Verdant Specialty Solutions (hereinafter “Verdant”), a chemical affiliate of Samyang Group, announced on Jan. 5 that it has acquired the manufacturing and research and development (R&D) operations of ‘Lubrizol Elmendorf,’ owned by global specialty chemical company ‘Lubrizol.’
Lubrizol is a global specialty chemical company that provides high-performance materials and solutions for various industries including engine oils, fuels, personal care, and advanced materials. Lubrizol Elmendorf, located in Texas, United States, is an operation that manufactures and researches specialty chemical products required for oil and gas production processes, including hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) scavengers, scale inhibitors, and corrosion inhibitors. The operation recorded sales of approximately 47 billion won (about $32.6 million) in 2024.
This acquisition was structured as a selective acquisition of assets, technology, and personnel necessary for specific operations rather than acquiring the entire company. The acquisition targets included Lubrizol Elmendorf’s manufacturing and R&D facilities and personnel, as well as product portfolios and pilot-scale equipment. The acquisition date is Dec. 31, 2025.
Samyang Group pursued this acquisition based on its assessment that Lubrizol Elmendorf has a complementary product portfolio that does not overlap with Verdant’s energy solutions business group while creating synergy effects. Through this acquisition, Lubrizol Elmendorf’s assets will be integrated into Verdant’s energy solutions business and operated as a manufacturing and innovation hub in North America.
Through this business acquisition, Verdant will expand its portfolio beyond existing amphoteric surfactants for personal care and nonionic surfactants for industrial use to include specialty chemical materials for the energy sector, while pursuing next-generation product development utilizing R&D infrastructure. The strategy is to strengthen its position in the specialty chemical products market for oil and gas in the long term.
Verdant CEO Todd Nelmark said, “This acquisition is an important strategic milestone in the process of Verdant building a differentiated technology-driven energy solutions business portfolio,” adding, “The Elmendorf operation possesses complementary chemical technologies and excellent R&D capabilities that will serve as a foundation for the company’s future growth.”
Meanwhile, Verdant, a global specialty chemical materials company acquired by Samyang Group in 2023, has approximately 1,000 customers worldwide, including global personal care brands such as Unilever and L’Oréal. Based on production facilities established in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, the company is accelerating its global market expansion.
