HL Mando Co., Ltd., an automotive sector affiliate of HL Group, has received official approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global climate change response initiative, for its ‘2035 greenhouse gas reduction target’.

The targets include a 63% reduction in direct and indirect emissions from business sites (Scope 1·2) and a 66.3% reduction in indirect emissions from supply chains (Scope 3), both compared to 2023 levels by 2035. Meeting the SBTi science-based reduction targets demonstrates global climate change response commitment, and HL Mando is being recognized as a proven case of concrete ESG management achievements in the global automotive industry.

This achievement also holds significant meaning in terms of HL Mando’s own vision. The ‘HL 2045 Carbon Neutrality Vision’ declared by HL Mando in 2023 has been formalized with this SBTi approval. It is being evaluated as entering the practical implementation stage, proving itself as a sustainable company, and furthermore encompassing the pursuit of ‘better life’, which is HL Group’s aspiration.

Following the vision declaration, HL Mando has been operating a Carbon Neutrality Promotion Committee to comply with limiting global average temperature rise to within 1.5℃. The key focus is greenhouse gas reduction. In 2024, HL Mando not only converted approximately 15.1% of its global business sites’ electricity consumption to renewable energy, but also concluded Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and purchased Renewable Energy Certificates (REC), gradually expanding implementation to 12 major locations across 7 countries worldwide including Korea, the United States, China, Europe, and India.

Particularly over the past two years, the company has strengthened its reduction management capabilities through standardization of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emission data and establishing verification systems meeting SBTi requirements. The most significant achievement can be cited as securing transparency, consistency, and verifiability of ESG data, laying the foundation for mandatory ESG disclosure. HL Mando is also enhancing its supply chain ESG management level. This includes operating supplier carbon reduction programs, introducing low-carbon raw materials, designing eco-friendly products, and advancing greenhouse gas inventory systems.

SBTi is a global initiative that scientifically verifies companies’ greenhouse gas reduction targets. It examines and determines whether targets align with the Paris Climate Agreement’s standard of ‘limiting global average temperature rise to within 1.5℃’. It is a credible global alliance established in 2015 by four international climate organizations: the UN Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
