I get these threads of sasaeng accusations coming across my timeline nearly every day, even for groups I don’t know much about, and none of them EVER actually contain sasaeng behavior. I’m not saying the stuff they mention is healthy, but I feel like there’s an important distinction between sasaeng and just a fan that’s way too obsessed.
For example, most of the threads I see include stuff like the fan going to every show on a tour, the fan going to a lot of fansigns, or the fan getting a lot of fancalls. None of these make a sasaeng. Sasaeng means ‘private life’. A person that goes to official, company sanctioned events with tickets they paid for doesn’t make them a sasaeng, it just makes them super obsessed (and enviably rich lol). Obviously this behavior can absolutely go hand in hand with being sasaengs and can be unhealthy in itself, but it alone does not make a sasaeng. The distinction of a sasaeng trading information about an idol’s private life and intruding upon it is important to distinguish in my opinion to show how dangerous they actually are.
I don’t know, maybe I just come from a different era where sasaengs were a lot louder we heard a lot more about the dangerous situations they cause. Also this definitely just could not matter at all. Truthfully this could absolutely just be me being a bit obsessive about definitions lol. But when I see a thread about someone being a sasaeng I’m expecting them to be on flights, or at private schedules, or in the vents, not just at every stop on a tour.
Please feel free to comment if you just feel like this is a non-issue though hahaha it’s just a pet peeve of mine.
