Rebuilding Korea Party’s Jeong Do-sang: “Merger Failed Due to Democratic Party’s Power Struggles… We Will Contest Jeonbuk Governor Election”

Jeong Do-sang, Chairman of the Jeonbuk Provincial Committee of the Rebuilding Korea Party, slammed the background behind the collapse of merger discussions with the massive ruling party, the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK). He stated, “It is the result of internal power struggles within the Democratic Party and offenses by ‘far-right forces’ within the party.” Chairman Jeong made it clear that the party would pursue an independent path. He announced a strong will to break the one-party monopoly in the Honam region by pushing forward with nominations for the Jeonbuk Governor and Jeonju Mayor candidates in the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections to be held on June 3.

In an interview with the Jeonbuk CBS YouTube channel ‘Chune News’ on the 13th, Chairman Jeong expressed his detailed views on the discussion of integrating the ruling parties, which has been a major topic in politics recently. He diagnosed the situation by saying, “The Rebuilding Korea Party merely received a proposal for a merger, yet fake news and conspiracy theories spread within the Democratic Party. Some figures rushed to attack Representative Cho Kuk, and the attempt to merge was effectively thwarted as a result of power struggles within the Democratic Party.”

Notably, Chairman Jeong defined some of the currents revealed within the ruling party during this process as “far-right.” He criticized, “After Representative Jung Cheong-rae’s proposal, policy discussions disappeared, and only personal attacks against Representative Cho Kuk continued. I felt deep concern over the fact that people with a sort of far-right mindset exist even within the democratic progressive camp.” He further analyzed, “The elements of internal conflict, which had solidified since the election of President Lee Jae-myung, have surfaced once again.”

Chairman Jeong pointed to the Democratic Party’s solid “local political cartel” as the more fundamental reason for the failure of the integration discussions. He stated, “The Democratic Party forms a powerful ‘One Team’ structure where Members of Parliament double as regional chairpersons and vertically integrate heads of local governments and local council candidates. The inertia to maintain this vested interest structure is blocking the greater cause of integration.”

He pointed out, “The Democratic Party’s nomination system is structured to be effectively under the influence of Members of Parliament. Since integration with the Rebuilding Korea Party is directly linked to the nomination interests of internal Democratic Party figures, internal resistance is inevitably high.” Ultimately, he explained that this protection of vertical vested interests is the essential barrier blocking political innovation. As a winning move to break this structure of vested interests, Chairman Jeong mentioned the “Cho Kuk Phenomenon” in Honam. He emphasized, “The support for Representative Cho Kuk as an individual, which we feel on the ground, exceeds the party support rate. Even if the party support rate might be lower, we physically feel that support for Representative Cho Kuk is higher than for anyone else.”

Chairman Jeong also revealed the Provincial Committee’s strong will regarding the rumors of Representative Cho Kuk running for a seat in Gunsan, which are being discussed as an idea within local political circles. While drawing a line by saying, “Representative Cho has not yet reached the stage of deciding to run,” he emphasized the justification for his appearance in Honam ahead of the June elections. Jeong conveyed the committee’s earnest desire, stating, “If Representative Cho, who is from Busan, crosses the wall of regionalism and gets elected in the heart of Honam, it will be a symbolic event that changes the political landscape of South Korea.”

Regarding the strategy for the June elections, he declared “full competition” in the Honam region and solidified his will for a head-on battle. Chairman Jeong dismissed the recent rumors in political circles about a “deal for the Jeonbuk Governor nomination right,” stating, “The Rebuilding Korea Party does not beg for solidarity.” He formalized the nomination of candidates for Jeonbuk Governor and Jeonju Mayor, saying, “In non-Honam regions, we can cooperate to secure momentum for state affairs, but in Honam, we will compete 1-on-1 with the Democratic Party without exception.” He also emphasized that the recruitment of competitive talent is currently underway, centered around Representative Cho Kuk and Vice Chairman Hwang Hyeon-seon.

Finally, Chairman Jeong expressed his ambition, saying, “The one-party monopoly in Honam that has lasted for decades has brought about political laziness. The Rebuilding Korea Party will engage in a head-on battle in this local election as a checker leading the innovation of Honam politics and as a powerful alternative force.”
