I picked up this pair in 인사동 from a small shop called 탈방. I’ve been trying to learn more about them but haven’t had much luck online. I’m especially curious about the writing on each one and whether they’re meant to be a male/female pair or both the same. I know that 장승 were typically placed outside villages to ward off evil, and the writing on these seems to be a mix of Korean and maybe Chinese or Japanese, but I’m not sure. If anyone recognizes the style or can tell me more about the meaning, traditions, or how these are usually used or displayed, I’d really appreciate it.
