I’ve been a fan of kpop for a long time (since 2005) and I’ve always focused a lot on vocals since I myself like to sing, so seeing the changes in vocal quality in groups lately is a bit saddeining for ME…
If you’re a long time kpop fan, you would know there was a time when the industry was so competitive that kpop groups focused on both their dance AND vocal performance.
This was during the early and golden era of kpop.
Throughout the years, it seems vocals have been less and less of a focus.
It’s gotten to the point that many of the main vocals and lead vocals are not confident enough to utter a simple belt in the 5th octave and tends to use falsetto instead .
These days , when I watch a kpop performance, it is mostly pre-recorded and for those ones that are supposed to be “live ” , it is highly processed or/and with a loud backtrack …
I see many comments of people complimenting vocals without even realizing it is a pre-recorded, and being unable to recognize how raw vocals are supposed to sound.
PS : Mr – removed videos on pre-recorded performances is not live vocals.
Hint : if idols are dancing vigorously without their vocals shaking, the volume or sound-direction fluctuating, it is most likely not live lol.
I miss the days when idols could dance and SING !
Examples of how live vocals should sound :
( Notice how they minimize their movements when they sing their parts )
