Korean-American moving back to Seoul to finish HS – school bullying questions

Hey – as stated in the title of the post I’m a Korean-American moving with my family to Seoul to finish my senior year. I have just about everything else worked out, but I’m kinda curious about something.

I’ve heard from my parents and other relatives that school bullying is far and away the most prominent issue for a lot of bullied kids in SK, totally unlike what I’ve experienced growing up in NYC so far. I’ve heard stories about sexual harassment, physical abuse, and mental torment, whereas I’ve experienced almost no bullying yet in my life.

What I’m curious is this – what’s to stop the bullied kid from just smashing his bully’s face in? Been wrestling for six years and boxing for four, and if someone’s slapping me in the face or calling my mother something terrible I’m definitely popping him one. I’m sure there are negative repercussions but curious about severity/whether I even need to be that worried.

I know there’s cliques/circles of friends that bully people in groups (which may serve as a deterrent), but if this stuff ends up happening to me (which it might, I’m shite at the Korean language and probably won’t understand any cultural references/knowledge), I’d like to know if there’s anything huge that happens to you if you fight back. I would logically expect it to be easier to fight back in SK due to the less widespread presence of knives and the complete absence of guns.

Thanks!
