Magical Girl entertainment is catered to a female audience. Guys enjoy too, of course, but stuff like Sailor Moon was made by a woman with young girls in mind. It’s great that everyone can enjoy it, but it’s not surprising that it’s a girl magnet. Their fanchants for Do the Dance are fun to listen to. Also the news that for the fan meet, they had to turn allow women into the men’s room because there was so many of them and they had to use the bathroom.
Lolita fashion is also catered towards women, specifically it was worn as a symbol of empowerment for Japanese women. Here is a study on it if you have time. It is an interesting read. This was confused with Lolita the book when ILLIT first debuted, but that’s a very different thing with no connection other than sharing the same name. This left people to worry (fake concern from some) that ILLIT would be liked by mostly perverted men, but time has shown that’s not the case.
This isn’t to say that ILLIT has no male fans, or that the existing ones are pervs. It’s great that guys can enjoy too. It’s just that ILLIT had that narrative going around, so it’s nice to see it’s not true. I remember when someone made an analysis of sales and it said a lot of middle aged men were buying ILLIT albums. Perhaps they bought for their daughters or their wives used their card/set up accounts in their name? I know my mom does that with everything lol
