The context I’m about to provide isn’t directly related to the main point of this post, but I’ll share it anyway. Back in 2022, when ITZY were on tour, they had a dinner with JYP. Yeji brought up concerns about how quickly trends were changing and how fast their songs were dropping on the charts. It was around that time that people really started questioning ITZY’s musical identity.
JYP gave an answer that didn’t really address her concern and instead said:
There aren’t many idols who can hold a mic and dance at the same time. That’s who’ll survive. Those who can dance and sing live without backtrack will survive in the industry.
Whether or not he actually answered Yeji’s question is irrelevant here. I want to focus on what he specifically said. Do you think there’s truth to that statement? Realistically, in 2026, there are plenty of groups and idols who find success without excelling in those areas. Do you think groups that can truly sing live at a high level while dancing will have the most longevity? Or have times changed to the point where factors outside of dance, live vocals, or performance ability in general now trump everything he mentioned?
