I saw this conversation being brought up when discussing how different the camerawork for older generation (2nd gen & early 3rd gen) kpop artists was compared to the current landscape of stage camerawork.
Modern gen idols seem more hyperaware of the different fancams that will be uploaded later & finding the camera to perfect their facial expressions + the camerawork in general being so up & close, fast paced with overexposed lighting, multiple jump cuts & angles, having several different performance takes patched together to make the final one uploaded, etc. The post production editing doesn’t help either.
It’s as if everybody from the idol to the cameramen are making the performance that could mainly be enjoyed in the form of an uploaded video than a physical performance. It just /feels/ overly manufactured. (I’m not saying the artists are performing without passion)
You can even see it with the rise in popularity with pre recorded performances & other content like solo fancams, solo facecams, one take stage cams, full cam performances, moving dance practices, camera work guides, etc. There’s even official reaction cams for each artist to see how they react to whatever else is happening in the award show.
The performance style of award shows & other special shows also switched over to a more theatric(??) approach. I think it’s one of the reasons people found 2nd gen performers like 2NE1 & Big Bang very refreshing recently. It felt like they were performing to the audience & engaging with them in a way that wasn’t just a singular yell before another dance break.
Obviously, covid 19 definitely accelerated & contributed to how we got to this style of performance, but it was on its way there slowly even before that.
This is not to say that modern gen kpop performers are ass & be a bitter nostalgic 2nd gen fan btw. I’m not even a 2nd gen fan and the entirety of my favourite artists come from 3rd to 5th gen. You can also obviously prefer the newer method of stage work too. These artists are putting a lot of effort into the performances & it’s not really a “fault” of anybody in particular.
I just saw some really cool SNSD music show cams & definitely prefer that type of camerawork & performance style over the current prominent style in this hyper digital era.
