Is it Los Angeles or Lateral Axis?

I was talking with a friend about LA Galbi and where the name came from. We don’t buy the story that it comes from “Lateral Axis” because:

  1. That cut already had a name, flanken. Any competent butcher would know that name and wouldn’t invent a new label based on a mathematical term.
  2. It’s unlikely that non–English-speaking Korean immigrants in the 1960s–70s would coin such an awkward English phrase.
  3. If “Lateral Axis” was a preexisting term in the U.S. alongside flanken, I’ve never seen it. Has anyone ever heard the cut called that here?
  4. As a Korean immigrant, it just makes sense that those Korean 아저씨s and 아줌마s would just call it LA (Los Angeles) 갈비 like 수원갈비, 평양냉면, 안동찜닭, etc. It’s just very Korean.

If this has come up before, sorry. I searched and couldn’t find a definitive answer.
