I do not understand what is the deal with photocards?

This is a very honest curious question and probably an unpopular opinion too. Please let me understand what is the deal with photocards? Why is getting it a big deal especially in this day and time? AND they could be so costly (I’ve seen a Taeyong photocard sold for $250 in eBay). Or I’ve read of people buying a lot of albums just to collect the photocards they need.

I mean, this concept isn’t really new and I know people had been collection photos before (stamps even). Just like way back in early 2000s when I was a lot younger, photocards of the Meteor Garden casts have are being sold outside my school and they’re selling hot like pancakes. Even anime photocards too. We even have a store in our local mall that’s dedicated to selling anime merchs and has famous anime photocards. And with Kpop’s rise, I’ve started seeing idols’ photocards too before.

These were older times. I myself have bought a couple before. But this was back when there weren’t smart phones, people are going to computer shop to browse the internet, not all have PCs or laptops in their home, and even printers. When all these are just barely new and not as accessible.

But now? Now you can just either save your idols’ photos in your phone, mac or what. You’ve got printer to print out photos much more easily.

I am just also bewildered that these costs a lot (either from having to buy more than one albums to be able to collect the other photocards or having to buy them from someone selling them).
