Hyundai Globis to build waste battery management in Jeju

South Korea’s Hyundai Glovis Co. will establish a management system for used electric vehicle (EV) batteries in Jeju Island.

The company announced on Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Jeju Technopark to promote the used EV battery industry.

According to the Air Quality Preservation Act, EV owners who received government subsidies must return their vehicle batteries to local authorities when deregistering their EVs.

In Jeju, 21,000 EVs registered before 2021 are subject to this requirement.

Until recycling infrastructure is established, Hyundai Glovis will transport the batteries to the mainland in specially developed containers via ship.
