Okay so I’m behind talking about this but I have been listening to this album non-stop for 3 (?) weeks since its release.
I actually didn’t really like K-pop before I lived in Korea for 2 years (22-24) where I became a huge New Jeans fan but I somehow didn’t discover XG until I moved back to America! Anyway, I really liked them then but this new album is just incredible.
Every song on this album is not only excellent, but also of a varied style. There’s your classic K-pop (with XG flair) style, but also R&B, Vocal house, breakbeat, hip-hop/rap, soft pop, alt-rock/pop-punk, and plenty of mixing between other genres!
On the pop-punk… at first I didn’t like O.R.B. because it feels so out of place in the album but on like listen 3 I realize, “wait a second, I really like this type of music, or at least young me did!” and of course, the ladies were correcting me in the song, “If you don’t like it, fuck you!”
I think really the only “bad” track on the album is the intro… which is kind of silly to say, but it doesn’t really do anything for the listening experience if you’re going to sit the whole album. Besides that, the only downside is that its kind of short! The entire album comes in around 29 minutes, I don’t know anything about averages but I have to think most full length albums are in the maybe 40-45 minute range. But hey, says a lot if your only complaint about an album is that it isn’t long enough! 9/10
Last note… I realize some people may not consider XG to be K-pop, but they do seem to HQ and perform mostly in Korea, sorry if they’re not close enough for this sub.
