South Korea’s Government Employees Pension Service (GEPS) on Wednesday appointed Sohn Young-jin, former head of risk management at KB Asset Management Co., as new chief investment officer.

On July 7, he will assume the two-year role, which is renewable annually for one additional year, according to investment banking sources.

Sohn had led asset management at Prudential Life Insurance Co., formerly the Korean arm of Prudential Financial Inc., as CIO since joining the firm in 1999.

Following KB Financial Group’s acquisition of the life insurer, he had served as chief risk officer at KB Asset Management.

He is succeeding Baek Joo-hyun, who is retiring on July 3 after serving as CIO for three years. His original two-year term was extended by one year.

GEPS manages 12.31 trillion won ($9 billion) in assets as of the end of April.
