Figure skater, snowboarder fall short as Korea goes medalless

MILAN — Korea did not add to its medal total at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday, with a figure skater and a snowboarder coming up shy of a podium finish. Cha Jun-hwan came the closest in the men’s singles figure skating, where he ended up in fourth place with 273.92 points, only 0.98 of a point behind the bronze medal winner, Shun Sato of Japan. Cha fell while trying to land a quadruple toe loop early in his free skate but executed other elements cleanly to score 181.20 points in the free skate, the fifth-best mark in the field. Snowboarder Lee Chaeun finished sixth in the men’s halfpipe event with 87.50 points at Livigno Snow Park in Livigno, some 140 kilometers north of Milan. The 12 finalists each performed three times and the best score out of their three became their final score. After failing to complete either of his first two runs, Lee executed all five of his tricks in the third run. That still wasn’t enough for a medal. Also Friday, Korea beat Britain 9-3 for its second straight win in the women’s curling tournament at Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium in Cortina d’A
