Even a perfect CSAT scorer can be rejected as universities expand the use of school violence records in admissions. | 수능 만점자도 대학 불합격···'학교폭력' 입시 반영 확대

It has become reality that even students who score perfectly on the CSAT can be rejected from university. This is because records of school violence by perpetrators are now factored into admissions.

Major universities in Daegu applied stricter standards than other regions in their 2024 admissions which led to a surge of rejected applicants. Starting with the 2025 admissions cycle vocational colleges will also be required to apply these rules meaning the number of rejections is expected to rise even further.

Reporter Yoon Tae ho has the story.

Keimyung University had the highest number of applicants rejected due to school violence records in both the 2024 and 2025 admissions cycles.
There were 34 in the early admissions round and 4 in the regular round for a total of 38. This was not only the most in Daegu but also the most nationwide.

School violence records written in the student record known as the “saenggibu” are divided into nine levels from level 1 to level 9 depending on severity.

Keimyung University assigned deductions ranging from minus 2 points to minus 20 points. For the most severe sanctions such as expulsion or forced transfer they deducted an enormous 100 points.

Since Keimyung University’s perfect score for both early and regular admissions is 100 points this meant that perpetrators who received the highest level of discipline were given a score of zero and effectively disqualified.

Do Dal hyun Director of Admissions Keimyung University
We applied the Ministry of Education’s mandatory school violence reflection standards very strictly both in early admissions and regular admissions. I think we will continue applying the current deduction system.

Kyungpook National University rejected 22 applicants in the 2024 admissions due to school violence.
They assigned penalty points based on the level of discipline and for levels 8 and 9 the deduction went up to 150 points.

But for the 2025 admissions cycle they decided that levels 8 and 9 will automatically result in disqualification with no deduction process at all.

Kim Byung o Director of Admissions Kyungpook National University
School violence can range widely from minor verbal actions all the way to physical or sustained harm. Applying identical evaluations to all situations would actually be unfair.

Yeungnam University rejected 5 applicants and Daegu University rejected 1. In total 66 perpetrators were rejected at the four major four year universities in the region which accounts for 22 percent of the 298 rejections nationwide in 2024.

Following Ministry of Education guidelines vocational colleges must also reflect school violence records in admissions starting this year.
Although the specific standards are left to each school major universities in the Daegu region have already applied stricter standards than the national level and because the issue gained national attention through parliamentary audits the number of rejection cases due to school violence is expected to rise even more compared to 2024.

Even if you get a perfect score on the CSAT if you received the highest level of disciplinary action for school violence you will now be rejected from university.

Some say this is appropriate for preventing school violence while others argue it is excessive stigmatization. There are calls for supplementary measures such as allowing students to include evidence of reflection recovery efforts or improvement in their records.
