By now, people who know and like CHS will stick with the band. They’ve found their niche and stuck with it while also helping push forward a different genre of music that wasn’t heard from South Korean musicians.
SWELTERING NIGHT isn’t too many steps from other CHS releases. It’s still foundational beach music with even-paced tempos, strong melodies, and what could be described as an “alcoholic buzz” level of ease. “Siesta” is the slow intro and slips past your attention quickly. It’s sparse and more like a passing breeze than a realized song so it will work great as a set opener.
I think “One Summer Day” is the obvious front single with mei ehara featuring. I never heard of her before seeing her feature so I need to see how far or close her style is with CHS. But listening to her vocals, she can fit the mood without a problem. I can see this track added to multiple playlists for the summer.
“Wet Market” increases the tempo by a few beats per minute, probably to contrast “One Summer Day.” CHS creates background music with every release and it’s hard to deny that it’s enjoyable. But personally, listening to CHS constantly isn’t possible because it flows and thrives within this particular audio emotion and I need more variety.
With their expanding discography, CHS will create an excellent place within Korean music. Bands in the “beachside” genre are exploring styles that will attract worldwide audiences. It might not be CHS who breaks out first, but they’ll definitely have lifelong fans.
