okay this probably seems like a silly question but i thought someone might’ve gone through the same thing so i wanted to ask: is it possible to cancel renouncing your korean citizenship if it hasn’t been processed completely?
for some background, i (25 F) was born in the US. at the time of my birth, my mom was a renounced korean citizen, but my dad still had his korean citizenship, so that automatically gave me korean citizenship although i was never registered in korea.
i was supposed to study abroad in korea in 2020, so in 2019, i went through all the preparation and paperwork to get my korean passport. then in 2023, when i was 23, i decided to get rid of my korean citizenship (for work reasons), so i submitted all the 국적이탈 forms around july 2023. then in december of last year, i received an email from the ministry of foreign affairs that said they received my renunciation form and that it would take 10 months+ to process fully, which leads me to believe that it hasn’t been fully processed.
so yes, wanted to ask if it would even be possible to cancel renouncing my korean citizenship. the work thing didn’t really pan out and i’m hardcore regretting giving up my dual citizenship lol.
i know i should call the consulate but speaking in such formal korean scares me so i thought i would ask here first to see if anyone’s been through the same situation. any helpful thoughts or comments would be appreciated 🙂
