Weverse to launch new superfan subscription tiers.

Not sure if the flair is right.

Announced yesterday, Weverse is set to launch the new superfan subscription tiers. Initially it was thought that these tiers would rollout in the first quarter of 2025 but they’re rolling out December 1st.

Currently most subscribers pay around $24USD for the memberships in various groups fan communities. With the new Weverse – dubbed “digital membership” – the site will upsell fans into new tiers with prices ranging from $2 to $4 per month, which will offer additional benefits such as offline access to music and ad-free video streaming. From the linked article above:

This membership service, to be launched in Q4 of this year, will be separate from existing fanclub memberships on the platform and will offer “enhanced features for fans to enjoy Weverse in a more convenient environment, along with the integration of certain fanclub features.”

Some fans are also unimpressed with the paid membership offer, saying that it provides little additional value. The new paid membership tier will offer features such as ad-free and higher-quality video streaming, as well as offline access.

The article goes into some depth about how there is a politician claiming Weverse is a monopoly (whole other story) and “appearing to exploit fans for money” – no kidding. Most of us are aware how Weverse is just sucking fans dry of money but it will be interesting to see what $2 a month gets you, to me that should be basic membership that already exists for $24/year.

There is also a Korean Herald article about it and has some interesting thoughts from one fan, some of what was said is valid (imo):

“The monetization of artist content under the guise of ‘new benefits’ feels like turning fans into cash cows,” Park added. “It gives the impression that fans are seen as mere revenue sources, rather than being appreciated for their support.”

It will be interesting to see how it’s all spelled out once the notification is sent out by Weverse – they have a horrible habit of using the most confusing wording.

What sucks/is annoying, is that if you just paid for a regular membership, starting Dec 1st you might have to pay more just to access these supposed new benefits. Cool.
