Logistics of Joining the Korean Military (gyopo)

I’m a dual citizen Korean/American, recently renewed my long dormant Korean passport at a consulate here in the US. I know my last known address in Korea got the notice to join but I was active duty in the U.S. army at the time so I ignored it.

Ideally I’d like to join in April/May.

  1. How do I join exactly? Do I just get on a plane and enter with my Korean passport and hope the system flags me?

  2. I’ve read that for people in my situation the army would be willing to buy plane tickets to/from Korea from my home of record here in the U.S; not only for initial enlistment but for subsequent vacation(s) I may be able to take. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  3. Do I get any choice on what branch to serve and/or job/vocation or has that ship sailed already since I’m joining late? From some preliminary research it looks like because of my age (I am 29) some stuff like applying for KATUSA is not available for me.

Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.
