Between BoA and Lee Hyori, who truly defined 2000s K-pop popularity?

I’ve been going back to some early 2000s K-pop and I keep wondering about this.

On one hand, Lee Hyori was literally everywhere in Korea after 10 Minutes. People even called it “Hyori Syndrome.” She was the face of ads, variety shows, fashion trends, you name it.

But then there’s BoA, who was on another level internationally. She basically lived on the Oricon charts in Japan and sold millions there, which feels huge considering how rare that was for a Korean artist back then.

So I’m curious if you had to pick, who do you think was actually more popular overall back then? And who left the bigger impact long term?
