Alternate History - If South Korea won the Gamer War

Caused by the Saudi buyouts of worldwide gaming conglomerates culminating in an attempted hostile corporate takeover of the Korean Esports Association. This action was unilaterally blocked by the South Korean government, and they began orchestrating a state buyout. Relations between the two nations quickly soured, with a Korean and Saudi ambassador getting into a fist fight at a UN Summit.

The conflict is wildly considered to have started on May 2nd, 2020, when Saudi backed militants raided the Korean Embassy in Riyadh. Korea responded by procuring Chinese permission to send ballistic missiles through their airspace to strike Pakistan, who had stated they would back up the Saudis “to no limits”.

North Korea, taking the opportunity, began exchanging strikes with the South. They held back on leveling the border with artillery due to Chinese insistence. The greatest assistance from North Korea was allowing the Saudi Coalition to attempt to gain fledging air superiority over parts of the South. This allowed significant pressure to be placed on the Koreans to abdicate.

Korea took a different approach, using immense connections in tech and industry to raid and sabotage Saudi companies worldwide. This was most effective in Yemen and Oman, the former allowing Korean forces to operate with impunity within their borders due to their dire state, and Oman being a state of major Saudi investment, easily attacked from the Yemeni springboard. It is important to note Korean and Yemeni forces also often clashed informally. Yemen was not an ally.

The war ended due to escalating international pressure and oil sanctions on Saudi Arabia, and the reluctance of Pakistani support, wanting to maintain their arsenal for a potential confrontation with India.

Worldwide, Saudi Arabia maintains 97% percent ownership of global gaming, with Korea having 1%, and the rest of the world sharing the remaining 2% percent.

It may not be over, as the Saudis strive for 100% global dominance and “gaming irredentism” in Saudi Arabia reached a historic high in 2023.
