Random thought about what made kpop popular in SK in the first place

I love learning new things about the beginning of kpop. Obviously I wasn’t there so it’s impossible to really know everything which is why it’s so fun for me to learn a new fact over the years. Anyway I was watching (probably rewatching) one of DKDKTV’s videos about Seo Taiji and Boys and it emphasizes how they represented individualism and anticollectivism which was drilled in their parents and grandparents minds to lift SK from poverty, plus they were an authoritarian government. Teens loved Seo Taiji and Boys for the freedom of their lyrics, their fashion, their choices. A group that came together of their own will and passion for music.

Kpop was created BECAUSE of Seo Taiji’s popularity except Lee Sooman is exactly the opposite of what they represented for youths in SK. Lee Sooman created the slave contracts and as we know gave them little control over their own lives or music. It’s interesting that the next biggest group in SK (Bigbang) after Seo Taiji was from YG, which was formed by Yang Hyunsuk a member of Seo Taiji and Boys. (Not saying I like him) but it’s not a coincidence that the biggest groups were known for their control over their music. Seo Taiji, BigBang, BTS
Yes other groups are massive and amazing but it’s funny that all along that’s what thrives the most.

Then I also thought about an alternative universe where what if Lee Sooman or other business men hadn’t snatched up Seo Taiji and Boys idea and just let it be? Like would other groups have formed from their own free will and, like America, looked for record labels? Would the kpop system look different than it is now? Instead of having to audition and have a company control you?

This might be a stupid thought and I’m not very well spoken so 🤷🏻‍♀️
